Lower Austria Experiences Unprecedented Large-Scale Wildfire Response in St. Egyden

ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, emergency authorities in Lower Austria issued compulsory evacuation orders following the rapid spread of a forest fire in the Föhrenwald pine woodland near St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Officials confirmed that a significant wildfire has impacted St. Egyden in Austria, as fierce flames advanced to within 50 meters of residential areas, prompting the highest level of emergency alert, Level B4. Responders prioritized the swift evacuation of residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Early in the day, local authorities coordinated with regional disaster management units to evacuate at least 250 inhabitants from the danger zone. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden stated that emergency teams evacuated six homes on Bahnstraße and 50 units across five apartment buildings in the Waldstrandsiedlung area. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian organizations offered crisis support and essential supplies.

The rapid mobilization involved over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt. Ground crews worked alongside specialized aerial units, utilizing five police helicopters, two private aircraft, and a Black Hawk helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. Additionally, the Austrian Red Cross deployed 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to assist with evacuation operations and support those affected.

Level B4 Emergency Alert Activated in Lower Austria Amid Wildfire Crisis

This incident marks the second major wildfire in the Föhrenwald area within less than two weeks, following a previous 100-hectare forest fire that demanded a five-day containment effort. Officials confirmed that the new blaze ignited on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds spreading thick smoke plumes across regional transit routes. Authorities issued warnings for drivers to avoid main roads near Neunkirchen to ensure clear passage for emergency vehicles.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, confirmed that emergency teams established a containment perimeter around the fire’s main area to limit its spread. Crews also managed several smaller fires sparked spontaneously in neighboring communities such as Strelzhof and Netting. Officials emphasized that operational shifts were tightly controlled to prevent ground personnel from exceeding 12 consecutive hours during intense suppression efforts.

Medical responders report no injuries during initial firefighting activities

Law enforcement agencies from the state have begun preliminary investigations to determine the precise cause of the afternoon’s ignition. Authorities noted that the previous wildfire in the same forest was caused by leftover World War II phosphorus ammunition buried underground. While no direct connection has been established between the two incidents, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain exceptionally dry, increasing the wildfire risk across the region.

Throughout Friday evening, emergency services maintained continuous monitoring posts around the Föhrenwald perimeter to secure nearby residential zones. As the wildfire impacts St. Egyden in Austria, civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries occurred among residents or responders during the initial evacuation. Technical teams and forestry specialists are expected to continue perimeter stabilization and hotspot suppression over the upcoming days.
