VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In a significant development, Austria is gearing up for the deployment of BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest spacecraft domestically created to date. The mission aims to identify and evaluate interference impacting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. Austria intends to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The objective is to detect jamming and spoofing signals from orbit, as well as to collect data on when and where navigation disruptions occur.

As part of a multi-year research initiative, BEACONSAT will act as a technology demonstrator. Leading the project is GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology firm responsible for overall coordination. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, the company provides the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. To date, GATE Space has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core technological contributions from Austrian firms define the satellite mission
Multiple European companies contribute essential systems for Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies high-precision technology designed for detecting and analyzing GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems tailored for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Moreover, Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has supported GATE Space with approximately 750,000 euros through Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
The European Space Agency is involved by offering support and co-financing via its ESA Marketplace program for technology demonstrations. This initiative enables commercial space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials characterize BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite. The data collected on orbit regarding interference affecting satellite navigation signals will inform Defence Ministry procedures and help Austria develop its military space capabilities.

Scheduled for launch in February 2027, the mission will see a Falcon 9 rocket carry the satellite into orbit. Once deployed, BEACONSAT will collect and analyze GNSS interference data, supporting its research objectives. The project is a collaboration among Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology companies.
