Germany’s First Major Expansion of Counter-Drone and Security Infrastructure

FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Germany is significantly broadening its capabilities in drone defence as authorities face rapid technological advancements in unmanned aircraft. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone efforts would be a long-term pursuit for the Federal Police. He made these remarks during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday, highlighting an ongoing technological race between defence systems and those attempting to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

In December 2025, the Federal Police established a specialized counter-drone division to handle operations nationwide. Current estimates show that the team comprises approximately 70 personnel, according to recent government data. Officials plan to increase staffing levels to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry announced an expansion from four to eight operational sites, aiming to enhance coverage and speed of response throughout Germany.

Germany has also placed a focus on deploying counter-drone equipment at key airports managed by the Federal Police, including Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has been acquiring mobile detection and defence systems for deployment at aviation hubs. Due to security reasons, federal authorities have not disclosed specifics about these systems publicly. While police are responsible for drone defence within airport boundaries, state police oversee areas outside these zones.

Federal police unit enlarges its reach across the country

This expansion follows an incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors reported that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. They found enough evidence to suggest someone intended to detonate the device. Moreover, a cargo aircraft collided with an object believed to be another drone in the wider airport vicinity. On August 6, Germany’s federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation under the supervision of the federal prosecutor. The responsible party has not been publicly identified, as officials have refrained from assigning blame while evidence is being scrutinized. The incident has renewed concerns about safeguarding airports and critical infrastructure, prompting German officials to call for faster coordination between federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations managing drone threats.

Germany establishes new drone security research hub

On August 18, Germany launched a Technology Center for Drone Security at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The facility will also utilize research capabilities from the organization’s Braunschweig location. Researchers will conduct tests of drone detection and defence technologies in real-world conditions. The German Aerospace Center intends to invest over 10 million euros and create as many as 40 jobs. This new center aims to foster collaboration among researchers, security agencies, and private companies working on counter-drone solutions.

Operating alongside Germany’s Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which manages information sharing and analysis among federal and state agencies, the new facility strengthens the country’s efforts. Furthermore, Germany has revised federal police authorities to better cover drone detection and protection. Dobrindt noted that rapid technological developments require continuous innovation and testing of new systems. The current government initiative integrates operational police units, security assessments, and dedicated research to bolster protection against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
