UK Achieves 22.8 GW of Solar Capacity Ahead of New Plug-In Regulations Launch

    August 3, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts at the close of June 2026. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reported approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. During June alone, households, companies, and developers installed 27,391 systems, adding 132 megawatts of new capacity. The provisional figures may be updated once additional project data is incorporated into the national database. The total figure encompasses domestic rooftop panels, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June marked the second-highest month for installations within the UK data series. The peak remains March 2026, with 28,782 systems added. Over the year ending in June, solar capacity grew by 2.2 gigawatts, reflecting a 10.9% increase. Additionally, the market recorded around 269,000 systems installed during 2025, the highest annual total on record. Smaller rooftop arrays contributed most to the installation count, while larger projects provided a significant share of the increased generation capacity.

Current focus shifts toward the upcoming plug-in solar regulations, which will come into effect on August 27, 2026. These rules permit approved microgenerators to connect using a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are restricted to a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output. They must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely with the local distribution network. Devices such as plug-in batteries or systems that store imported household electricity are excluded from this regulation.

    Safety standards govern plug-in connections

This legislative update revises the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to the restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment. Each plug must be certified by a notified body as conforming to the relevant BS 1363 standards. Product approval applies across the UK, while the electricity safety amendment covers England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specification establishes criteria for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and user instructions. A technical investigation tested representative plug-in solar units under controlled domestic wiring conditions, demonstrating stable operation without sustained unsafe energisation or thermal hazards. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, informing the development of a UK-specific safety standard for market entry.

Retail sector prepares for approved products

A government consultation received 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of participants supported the interim specification, with most also endorsing the plug regulation. Contributors included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some expressed concerns about older household wiring, unregulated online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.

Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are actively preparing for the new product category. This connection method benefits households unable to use traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. Systems employing the new plug-in approach will remain illegal until August 27. Starting then, only approved products within the 800-watt limit may connect through a standard household socket. The total solar capacity recorded in June does not account for systems using this new plug-in framework.
