First Recorded Death of Endangered Australian Sea Lion from Bird Flu Occurs on Kangaroo Island

ADELAIDE / RankWire.AI / – South Australian environmental officials have confirmed the inaugural fatality of an endangered Australian sea lion due to H5N1 avian influenza. The discovery was made by a park ranger who found the carcass at Kangaroo Island, which hosts the third-largest single colony of this species, representing roughly five percent of its overall numbers. This marks the first instance of bird flu endangering an Australian sea lion on Kangaroo Island, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance efforts across key pinniped breeding zones.

Based on official reports from the South Australia Department for Environment and Water, laboratory analyses indicated a strong positive for H5 avian influenza. Environment Minister Emily Bourke explained that although the sea lion was recovering from a shark wound sustained three months earlier, post-mortem tests confirmed that the viral infection was the main cause of death. She added that the animal’s weakened immune system during its recovery likely made it more susceptible to the virus.

This event raises heightened conservation concerns for the species, which is native solely to Australia and has an estimated global population between 10,000 and 12,000 individuals. About 80 percent of the remaining population lives in South Australia, where coastal colonies had already experienced an annual decline of roughly two percent before the virus’s emergence.

Following the confirmed case, wildlife managers in the state launched protective management measures at Seal Bay. Teams treated over 400 sea lion pups with hookworm treatments to improve their immune health, while also trapping hundreds of feral cats to prevent transmission vectors around the colonies. As bird flu first endangered Australian sea lion dies on Kangaroo Island, environmental agencies are collaborating with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to investigate participation in international trials for experimental mammalian vaccines.

This case signifies a wider spread of the H5N1 strain among Australian marine mammals, subsequent to a confirmed infection in a long-nosed fur seal at Beachport on the Limestone Coast. Researchers from Charles Darwin University had previously issued warnings about potential mortality events among local seals, drawing comparisons to mass die-offs recorded in pinniped colonies across South America and sub-Antarctic regions.

Wildlife Authorities Enforce Biosecurity Protocols in Coastal Reserves

Across South Australia, more than 290 cases of H5 avian influenza have been confirmed in both bird and mammal species, accounting for over half of all cases documented nationwide. Authorities confirmed that no additional sea lion deaths have been reported at Seal Bay, though ranger vigilance remains heightened.

Ongoing daily monitoring continues across island sanctuaries and mainland haul-out sites, with biosecurity data, mortality reports, and disease management protocols accessible through official government environmental portals as teams work to safeguard vulnerable marine populations.
