Record Low in Austria’s First-Time Asylum Claims for July After a Decade

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria saw a total of 244 new first-time asylum applications, marking the lowest monthly count in ten years. This figure represents a roughly 65% decrease from 697 applications recorded in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When combining all asylum-related submissions, the total for July reached 840. These recent numbers reflect a significant downward trend in asylum requests over Austria during the first seven months of this year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received 5,743 asylum applications, a steep drop from 10,442 in the same period of 2025. This decline of approximately 45% highlights a substantial decrease from the previous year. The totals encompass various types of applications, with the July figure specifically representing initial claims. Austria’s government releases monthly asylum statistics, differentiating these categories to offer a clearer understanding of new versus repeat submissions.

In July, Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum applications, making them the largest nationality group for that month. According to the ministry, most of these Syrian cases involved children born in Austria, rather than newly arrived individuals. Austria continues to restrict family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decrease in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria reported more departures than first-time asylum applications. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country through voluntary departures or enforced removals. Of these, 4,615 were removals, and 4,241 were voluntary departures. Authorities also carried out 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum claims among member states.

Border apprehensions in Burgenland, in eastern Austria, have also decreased when compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities detained 339 individuals, a sharp contrast to nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. The Interior Ministry attributes this decline to increased enforcement and cooperation efforts with Hungary, which borders Austria. Additionally, Austrian police have participated in Operation Fox, a joint initiative targeting migrant smuggling and illegal border crossings.

2026 Asylum Numbers Continue to Decline

Following the trends of the first half of 2026, July’s asylum figures remain low. Austria received roughly 5,000 applications during the first six months, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these numbers as part of the country’s latest migration reports. The government also continues voluntary repatriation initiatives, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving Austria in July, according to official data.

Overall, the latest figures demonstrate a clear year-on-year reduction in both initial applications and total asylum requests. The 244 first-time applications in July represent the lowest point in a decade, as highlighted by government statistics, while the total monthly figure reached 840. The period from January to July saw 5,743 applications, remaining significantly below 2025 levels. Austria’s authorities categorize these figures as part of ongoing migration and asylum monitoring, providing separate data on applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
