CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s first foray into foldable smartphones, with U.S. pricing beginning at $1,999. The company unveiled the device on Sept. 9 at its Cupertino headquarters. Apple CEO John Ternus introduced the new model as part of its latest hardware lineup. Preorders will be available starting Oct. 16 across more than 70 countries and regions, with the initial units arriving at customers and stores on Oct. 23.

The design of the iPhone Duo follows a book-style form factor, featuring two Super Retina XDR screens. When closed, a 5.4-inch display handles standard phone functions, while opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner display suited for video, apps, gaming and multitasking. The device’s casing is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, and the hinge comprises over 100 components. Additionally, the phone holds an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance.
In its latest software adaptation, Apple has optimized its mobile operating system to leverage the expanded folding display. The iPhone Duo will come with iOS 27.1, featuring functionalities tailored for the new screen format. Users will be able to position two apps side by side and save frequently used app groupings. The open device can also display two Home Screen pages simultaneously. Touch ID is embedded in the side button, providing biometric authentication regardless of the device’s configuration.
Foldable screen enhances multitasking and camera capabilities on the iPhone
The rear camera array includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main sensor and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide lens. The main camera offers a 2x optical telephoto option with zero shutter lag support. Previewing selfies taken with the rear cameras is possible on the external display before capturing. Duo Preview also allows subjects to see their framing while another user operates the camera. The main camera is capable of recording 4K videos at up to 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision.
Powering the foldable iPhone is Apple’s A20 Pro processor and a dual-battery setup. A custom vapor chamber aids in heat management during intensive tasks. Apple states that video playback can last up to 31 hours on the inner display, while using the outer screen extends playback to 44 hours. The device supports fast wired and wireless charging, along with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity options.
