Frontex Reports Record 37% Drop in EU Border Crossings During First Half of 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from European Union sources reveal a 37% decrease in irregular border crossings into the EU in the initial seven months of 2026. According to Frontex, approximately 61,000 detections were recorded at the bloc’s external borders from January 1 to July 31. These figures are compared to the same timeframe in 2025 and show a significant decline across most key migration routes. The data serve as the latest indicator of irregular entry trends along the EU’s external frontier.

In the eastern Mediterranean, which remained the most active crossing route, 20,232 detections were reported, representing a 28% reduction from 28,068 during the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, marking a 55% decrease from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes accounted for roughly 60% of all detections recorded at the EU’s external borders. During this period, Libya continued to be the primary departure country along the Central Mediterranean route.

Contrary to this downward trend, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, with 11,217 detections, up 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June totaled 2,569, which is an increase from 1,079. Meanwhile, detections on the Western African route declined by 60% to 4,682, and crossings through the Western Balkan region fell 26% to 4,910. The Eastern Land Border experienced a 44% decrease, with 3,209 detections.

Mediterranean corridors lead EU border detection statistics

Additional data concerning crossings via the Channel toward the United Kingdom indicated a notable decline, with Frontex recording 22,469 attempted or successful crossings from the EU, which is a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel figures are not included in the EU entry total. Furthermore, Frontex reported 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, reflecting a 9% increase. It is important to note that the seven-month figures do not account for exceptional border incidents in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its estimates on preliminary EUROSUR data available as of Aug. 4, with the possibility of future revisions as authorities update figures. These statistics count detections, not unique individuals, meaning a person may be counted multiple times if detected at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is critical when comparing route-specific totals with overall migration numbers, as it reflects detection activity rather than individual counts.

The seven-month data reinforce the early-year decline trend

The recent figures build upon the decline reported by Frontex after the first half of 2026, when more than 49,000 irregular border crossings were recorded, also representing a 37% drop compared to the previous year. During that period, detections along the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than in 2025, but the seven-month comparison shows an increase of 37%. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% drop through July.

According to the agency, roughly 3,800 Frontex officers operate at the EU’s external borders, assisting national authorities in border management and rescue operations at sea. These personnel also support member states in implementing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data indicates uneven trends across different routes, with overall reductions in most major corridors but a continued rise along the Western Mediterranean pathway.
