UK Economy Demonstrates Resilience Amid Ongoing Cost Pressures in 2026

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – In early 2026, Britain’s economic expansion persisted despite persistent inflationary pressures, investment challenges, and hiring difficulties. According to EY, the UK’s gross domestic product is projected to grow by 0.9% this year and by 1.2% in 2027. The firm increased its 2026 forecast by 0.1 percentage points from its May estimate. This outlook assumes the Strait of Hormuz reopens by September, though shipping volumes are expected to stay below usual levels under this scenario.

UK economy avoids recession as cost pressures remain
Energy costs and above-target inflation remain central to the UK economic outlook.

Data from official sources revealed that the UK economy grew by 0.6% during the first quarter, following a 0.1% increase in the last quarter of 2025. Compared to the same period last year, output is now 0.9% higher. The services sector contributed most to this growth, expanding by 0.8%, while household spending rose by 0.6%. These figures do not qualify as a technical recession, which would require two consecutive quarterly contractions.

As of mid-2026, energy markets continue to exert significant pressure on UK prices and production costs. The Strait of Hormuz accounts for a substantial portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Although Britain imports limited energy directly from Gulf suppliers, global prices influence domestic fuel costs. Producer input prices have risen by 7.3% over the year ending in June, with crude oil input costs soaring by 42.3%, and factory-gate prices increasing by 3.5%.

Inflation remains a central focus for monetary policy

In June, the annual consumer price inflation slowed to 2.6%, down from 2.8% in May. Nonetheless, the rate stays above the Bank of England’s 2% target. Motor fuel prices have increased by 21.3% compared to the previous year. On July 29, the Bank of England maintained its benchmark rate at 3.75%. The decision was supported by a 6-3 vote to keep rates steady, with three members advocating for an increase to 4%. The voting outcome underscores ongoing concerns about inflationary pressures.

At the beginning of the third quarter, business surveys presented mixed signals. The manufacturing purchasing managers’ index declined to 51.9 in July from 52.5 in June. While this marked a four-month low, the index remained above the expansion threshold of 50. Meanwhile, a preliminary composite index increased to 52.1 from 49.3, covering both manufacturing and services, indicating renewed private-sector growth during July.

Weakness persists in investment and employment demand

Business investment saw a slight increase of 0.9% in the first quarter, after a 3% decline over the previous three months. Despite this, investment levels remain 1.3% below those of a year earlier. EY predicts a 0.7% decline in business investment for 2026, a downward revision from its earlier forecast of no change. The firm expects growth of 1.8% in 2027 and 2.6% in 2028, both below previous projections.

During the three months through June, the UK recorded 712,000 job vacancies, a decrease of 7,000 from the prior quarter and down 2.5% from the same period last year. Out of 18 industries surveyed, vacancies declined in 10. sectors. The quarterly change falls within the survey’s confidence interval. Meanwhile, regular pay increased by 3.4% from March to May. These latest figures reflect ongoing economic growth coupled with inflation above target, softer hiring activity, and reduced business investment for the year.
