US Issues New Belgium Travel Alert Highlighting Crime and Security Concerns for the First Time

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – Earlier this week, the U.S. State Department revised its travel advice for Belgium, urging Americans to exercise heightened caution due to issues related to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The update, issued on July 23, maintains Belgium at Level 2 on the department’s four-tier scale. Officials added specific concerns about crime and unrest to the advisory’s risk list and adjusted its summary accordingly. This update does not recommend avoiding Belgium altogether. Level 2 advises visitors to be more vigilant and to consult official safety guidelines before traveling.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

According to the advisory, petty theft is prevalent in popular tourist hotspots. Incidents such as purse snatching and pickpocketing frequently target international visitors. The State Department also cautions about robberies, theft of electronics, and theft from vehicles. It points out key locations like major cities, restaurants, train stations, buses, trams, and the Brussels metro, especially at night, as areas where travelers need to stay alert. It is recommended to keep valuables secured, carry minimal cash and ID, and remain vigilant in crowded environments.

In addition, officials have noted a rise in bag thefts on trains, particularly along the Brussels-Amsterdam route. Thieves often target lightweight bags placed on overhead racks. The advisory urges passengers to keep passports, cash, and other valuables within arm’s reach. For drivers, the advice includes locking doors, closing windows, and avoiding leaving visible belongings inside parked cars. Belgian Federal Police warn that thieves often work in teams, using methods such as crowding, bumps, or staged distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Security concerns in transportation and crime trends receive increased attention

Belgium’s terrorism section emphasizes that violent attacks and related threats remain an ongoing concern. Public events, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, educational institutions, parks, shopping districts, and transportation hubs are identified as potential targets. The guidance highlights that terrorists and their supporters might aim at U.S. citizens abroad. Currently, Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis rates the national threat level at Level 3, categorizing it as serious. Under the four-point threat scale, officials see a Level 3 threat as both possible and probable.

The updated advisory also emphasizes the potential for demonstrations and strikes. While large gatherings are generally peaceful, they can cause disruptions to transport and vital services. The State Department explains that protests may be triggered by political, economic, or social issues, especially during holidays or major events. Police routinely monitor such gatherings, and travelers are advised to avoid crowds. It’s recommended to stay informed through local updates, monitor traffic notices, and adjust travel plans if public transportation faces delays or closures.

Preparedness and vigilance recommended for travelers in Belgium

The U.S. advises travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, prior to or during their visit. This service delivers alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and assists officials in contacting Americans during emergencies. Visitors should also familiarize themselves with Belgium’s entry policies, local laws, and health precautions. Tourists from the U.S. can stay up to 90 days without a visa, provided their passports remain valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure from the Schengen area.

In addition, travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant in tourist districts, near banks, and around ATMs. Monitoring local information and knowing how to reach emergency services are crucial. Belgium uses 112 for life-threatening emergencies across Europe and 101 for local police. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular assistance to American nationals. The July update kept the advisory level unchanged but incorporated specific warnings regarding crime and unrest, emphasizing the importance of caution for travelers visiting Belgium.
